On Thursday, May 23, Book Buzzers will meet to share thoughts about the latest historical novel from best-selling author Lisa See. Many of us have read and enjoyed See’s previous novels, including Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and The Island of Sea Women. The subject of See’s most recent book Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is Tan Yunxian, a real-life woman who lived in China during the 15th century Ming dynasty. She went on to become a famous doctor and published a compendium of 31 cases in the work titled “Miscellaneous Records of a Female Doctor.” According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman” but Tan Yunxian, who was born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness, is raised by her grandparents to be of use despite the many gendered societal expectations of her privileged life. Given the book’s title, it is no surprise that Yunxian is surrounded by women who help her, including her father’s concubine, her personal maid, her grandmother (one of only a handful of female doctors in China at that time), another young midwife in training, and countless others who appear at her side to educate and assist her. The book is a captivating story about women helping other women. It is also an engaging reimagining of the life of a woman who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would still be considered remarkable today. The evening’s discussion will be led by Katherine Dong and Erin Booker.
