On Thursday, September 26, members will gather to discuss Isabel Allende’s epic novel A Long Petal of the Sea. This New York Times best-selling book spans several decades and crosses continents as it follows two young people as they flee the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War in search of a place to call home. The story begins in the late 1930’s when civil war grips Spain and General Franco and his Fascists have succeeded in overthrowing the government, forcing thousands to flee in a treacherous journey over the mountains into France. The novel follows the fortunes of a pregnant young widow and an army doctor who marry out of necessity and who are among the many ultimately traveling to Chile by sea in search of a new life.
Allende has written 24 books, which have been translated into 42 languages, selling more than 74 million copies and garnering more than 60 prestigious awards. A Long Petal to the Sea tells the story of events that Allende herself actually lived through. The evening’s discussion will be led by Elizabeth Kinney.
Members are invited to bring snacks and beverages (wine is welcome) to share with the group. Enter through the kitchen door as the front door will be locked. Hope you can join us.

On Thursday, October 24, the group will meet for conversation about Lynn Cullen’s fascinating novel The Woman with the Cure and Barb Bridges will lead the evening’s discussion. Set in the 1940’s and 1950’s, the book centers on the race to find a vaccine to combat the deadly polio disease that still today kills or paralyzes its victims, with children being its most common targets. In the middle of the last century, outbreaks of the disease put American cities on lockdown while scientists around the world searched for a cure. This book focuses on Dr. Dorothy Horstmann (1911-2001), an epidemiologist, virologist, clinician, and educator, and the first woman appointed as a professor at the Yale School of Medicine.
Dr. Horstmann made significant contributions to the fields of public health and virology, her most notable being the demonstration that poliovirus reached the central nervous system via the bloodstream, upsetting conventional wisdom and paving the way for polio vaccines. While Dr. Horstmann’s work was deserving of a Nobel Prize, it is not surprising to learn that two men won it instead. Her long term belief that polio is carried through the blood of its victims was dismissed for many years…until one of her male colleagues started to research blood as a potential carrier. After polio was conquered, Dr. Horstmann worked on the rubella vaccine which is still used today. As the book demonstrates, she sacrificed almost everything else to pursue her work. Plan to join us for a discussion of Cullen’s fascinating account of this remarkable woman’s life and that of many other strong and dedicated women who worked to defeat polio.
Members are encouraged to bring snacks and beverages to share (wine is welcome!). Please enter through the kitchen door as the front door will be locked. Hope to see you there.

The group will gather on Thursday, November 14 to discuss National Book Award winner Alice McDermott’s latest novel Absolution. The book takes the form of memories shared between two women some 60 years after they left Saigon, living on the margins of the Vietnam War. American women…and most especially wives…have typically been minor characters in the literature about that long-protracted engagement, but in Absolution they take center stage. Tricia is a shy newlywed, married to a rising attorney on loan to Navy intelligence. Charlene is a practiced corporate spouse, a mother of three, a beauty and a bully. Their relationship is not one of friendship but of domination.
The story is set in Saigon in 1963 where the two women form an unbalanced alliance as they strive to be helpmates to advance their husbands’ careers while also working to “do good” for the people of Vietnam. Charlene enlists the help of other military wives to do her bidding, ranging from taking toys and candy to children in hospitals to importing Barbie dolls, dressing them in Vietnamese clothing and giving them away. The reader gets a sense of their intended good will but the essential uselessness of their activities…and it seems to mirror the activities of their husbands in the Vietnam War.
The structure of the book is unusual in that it is comprised of three letters: two from the now widowed Tricia to Rainey, Charlene’s daughter, describing events that took place 60 years earlier, and a third from Rainey to Tricia. Katherine Dong will lead the evening’s discussion.
Members are encouraged to bring snacks and beverages to share (wine is welcome!). Please enter through the kitchen door at the back of the building as the front door will be locked. Hope to see you then!
